- * Neutrophil bactenecins signatures *
- *************************************
-
- A number of active peptides secreted by neutrophils (polymorphonuclear
- leukocytes) have been found [1,2] to be evolutionarily related. These proteins
- are listed below:
-
- - Pig cathelin, which is probably an antibacterial peptide [3].
- - Pig myeloid antibacterial peptide PMAP-23.
- - Bovine bactenecin 5 (Bac5), a proline and arginine-rich potent antibiotic.
- - Bovine cyclic dodecapeptide, a potent antibiotic.
- - Bovine indolicidin, a tryptophan-rich antibiotic.
- - Rabbit CAP18, a protein that binds to the bacterial lipopolysaccharides
- (LPS).
- - Rabbit p15, which also binds to LPS and exhibits antibacterial activity.
-
- Structurally these proteins consist of three domains: a signal sequence; a
- conserved region of about 100 residues that contains four cysteines and a
- highly divergent C-terminal section of variable size. It is in the C-terminal
- section that the antibiotics Bac5, indolicin, PMAP-23 and cyclic dodecapeptide
- are found; they are proteolytically processed from their precursor by
- elastase.
-
- We have derived two signature patterns for these proteins; the first one
- corresponds to the beginning of the conserved region and the second one to
- a central part that contains two of the conserved cysteines.
-
- -Consensus pattern: L-x-Y-x-E-x-V-x-[RQ]-A-[LIVM]-[DQ]-x-[LIVMFY]-N-[EQ]
- -Sequences known to belong to this class detected by the pattern: ALL.
- -Other sequence(s) detected in SWISS-PROT: NONE.
-
- -Consensus pattern: F-x-[LIVM]-K-E-T-x-C-x(10)-C-x-F-[KR]-E
- -Sequences known to belong to this class detected by the pattern: ALL.
- -Other sequence(s) detected in SWISS-PROT: NONE.
